Frequently Asked Questions When Booking a DJ
How early should I book?
Peak periods are Saturdays between May and October and many of these will be booked two to three years in advance.
I opt for quality over quantity and work at far less events than most DJs for three reasons:
- Each wedding I perform at often requires around 20 hours preparation beforehand.
- The vast majority of my bookings are to be both Master of Ceremonies plus Wedding DJ for the evening reception. This often means leaving my house at 9am and not returning until 2 or 3am the next morning. This is another reason that I rarely do weddings on consecutive days.
- I spend every other weekend with my young daughter and so do a maximum of 30 weddings per year.
I will always hold the date of your wedding for seven days from the day you receive the quote so you don’t have to make any rushed decisions.
How do I confirm a booking?
The booking form is emailed to you, which is returned signed with the 25% retainer fee.
Payment can be made by cheque or bank transfer. The booking form includes the invoice, showing bank details.
Do you use smoke machines?
Generally not for two reasons
- They tend to send the venue’s smoke alarms into hyperdrive. If you would like a smoke effect, I’d recommend a haze machine, they tend to be less, smoky.
- The majority of venues do not permit the use of smoke machines. Some will accept haze machines, although many venues do not understand the difference between them.
Do you use strobe lighting?
I don’t. Unless it’s specifically requested in advance as they can cause problems with those with epilepsy.
How long does it take you to set up?
It generally takes me under an hour to set up all of the sound & lighting equipment, and I will usually arrive at the venue just over an hour before the start time. If that’s not early enough, you always have the option of an early set up.
Do you have PLI and PAT Certificates requested by the venue?
All my equipment is Portable Appliance Tested (PAT) annually to the current HSE Electricity at Work regulations so every item has a PAT certificate.
Additionally I’m a member of SEDA (South East DJs Association) and NADJ (National Association of DJs) **link**which provides me with £10 million worth of full Public Liability Insurance **link**(PLI) and Employers Liability Insurance. If you’d like to see copies of all or any of these certificates, please let me know.
I also have a Risk Assessment policy.
Additionally I have a Pro Dub License which allows me to legally convert CD music tracks to audio mp3 files for playback and use music downloads in accordance with copyright law. That means all requisite royalties are paid to the artists involved – and they’ll be no one from Sony coming after me with pitchforks.
Do you accept music-requests
Yes, on the night I always announce on the microphone that guests are welcome to ask me for any requests they would like to hear,
The only reasons I wouldn’t play a guest request:
- The request is on your “do not play list”
- It’s a song that is likely to clear the dance floor
- The song/lyrics are inappropriate
What types of music do you play?
I’ll play any kind of music you want – this is your day not mine. I have a “Client Portal” which allows you to pick out whatever tracks you want from over 50,000. It even gives your guests access to put in requests too.
